Believe It…The Denver Broncos Are For Real
By Jeremy Glasoe | October 5, 2009
On Sunday, at Invesco Field at Mile High, the Denver Broncos withstood their biggest test of the season and beat the Dallas Cowboys 17-10 in front of the home crowd. The Broncos are now 4-0 to start the season and have a 2 game lead in the AFC West. Do you believe now?

This Defense was and has been a laughingstock around the league, ranking at or near the bottom in every major statistical category. Laugh no longer, the Broncos are doing it with Defense! In less than a year, the defense has transformed into #1 in the league, only allowing an average of 6.5 points per game through it’s first 4 games. Compare that with last years 28 points per game that the defense surrendered to opponents and what you have is a tremendous turnaround, thanks to Josh McDaniels addition of Mike Nolan.
It doesn’t end there, the Broncos defense has also forced 10 turnovers in the first 4 games, while last year they could only muster 13 total for the whole season.
One of the biggest stats that I love is, Denver is second in the NFL with a +7 turnover differential on the season. History in the NFL says, the team that wins the turnover war, wins the game.
That leads me to Kyle Orton, who has No interceptions on the year. Jay Cutler, who was traded away for the unwanted Orton, has 5 interceptions to his name so far this season. If, the Broncos had 5 int., they would not be 4-0.
Orton was not perfect, but he didn’t make any bonehead mistakes to hurt his team. He also stepped up and made the plays at the end of the game when his team needed him, and although he did miss some throws to wide open receivers, he is just a Winner!
Field Notes:
- Elvis Dumervil registered two of the Broncos’ five sacks, bringing his season total to eight and tying him with Cincinnati’s Antwan Odom for the NFL lead.
- The defense bottled up one of the top rushing teams by holding the Cowboys to 74 yards on 25 carries. The Cowboys average 163.8 rushing yards for the year.
- The Defense didn’t allow a point and gave up only 38 rushing yards to the top-ranked rushing offense in the NFL over the final three quarters.
- Brandon Marshall’s 51 yard touchdown reception just after the 2-minute warning, broke a tie ball game and put the Broncos up by 7. The catch and run was amazing, BMarsh caught the ball near the sideline, reaching over the top of Terence Newman, then he broke to the middle of the field, before cutting back and running for daylight to the corner of the endzone. Dallas defenders were left in the wake all over the field.
- D.J. Williams really stood out to me on the defense, with nine tackles (all solo), a sack (1 yd.) and two passes defensed to go along with a fumble recovery. Great game D.J.
