Broncos working out former CU punter

By John Livingston | October 21, 2009

The Denver Broncos worked out former University of Colorado punter Mitch Berger today according to ESPN insider Adam Schefter. This comes after head-coach Josh McDaniels expressed his dissatisfaction over San Diego Chargers Darren Sproles punt return that went for a touchdown in last Monday nights game.

Berger is a 15 year pro who last played for the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2008; he averaged 41.3 yards per punt in 13 games played. Current Broncos punter Brett Kern is averaging 46.1 yards per punt this season but he did surrender the touchdown to Sproles and in the pre-season he allowed another big return to the Chicago Bears Devin Hester by kicking right to the lethal returner. It is clearly the touchdowns given up that is bugging coach McDaniels and it is the reason why he may turn to Berger who has not allowed a touchdown return on a punt since 2004 (Berger did not play the 2006 season).

In training camp the Broncos used Brett Kern and rookie Britton Colquitt at the position. Colquitt failed to make the roster and it seemed Kern would be with the team for his second year. While it may seem a bit peculiar right now since the Broncos are 6-0, it is clear that McDaniels is focused on perfection and is holding every player accountable and the punter is no exception. If nothing else McDaniels is sending a message to Kern that he needs to learn to kick away from dangerous returners.
