Tough way to go out
By Nick Abel | October 13, 2009
Another game, another late inning collapse, this one however hurt the most. After being behind almost the whole game, the Rockies rallied and took a 4-2 lead with big hits from Jason Giambi and Yorvit Torrealba. Going to the ninth with close Houston Street coming to slam the door and send this back to Philly, it all went horribly wrong.
Street had two outs already and could not get it done. Ryan Howard, and Jayson Werth combined with hits to give the Phillies a 5-4 lead and that’s all it took. Troy Tulowitzki once again ended the game this time on a check swing strike three call. Being at the game, all I heard was how bad the Rockies needed to get rid of Street and he should not be on the team next season. That is obviously the wrong answer. He did go 35 of 37 in save opportunities this season, leading the National League. If you want to dump Street, then why not take Tulo with him? He did end both games where a base hit would have tied at and kept the game going. I’m not saying to get rid of either of them. You can’t put the loss of game 3 and 4 all on Street.
The keys to the games that I laid out in my preview said the Rockies needed timly hitting and a strong showing out of the bullpen. With exception to Jason Giambi and Yorvit’s hits in the 8th of game 4, the Rockies ended innings that had the potential to put up big runs. You have to give the Phillies credit. They hit when they needed to and made the pitches when they needed to. There’s a reason they are the defending champs. They have been there before and know how to win. As a Rockies fan, you have to look at this another building block for the future. Remember, the Rockies swept the Phillies out in the first round in 2007 and they came back in 08 to win it all.
Some big questions we can think about for this offseason. Will the Rockies consider offering a one year contract to Jason Giambi? Can the Rockies go out and get a top middle reliever or starting pitcher? Will Jeff Francis come back as the pitcher he was in 2007? How long will it take for the Rockies to sign Tracy as the permanent manager? These questions and more I will talk about in future posts here on C.S.D. It will be a very interesting to see how the offseason unfolds. Either way, it was a great season and thanks to the Rockies team for giving us fans another Rocktober. Go Rockies.
