Colorado’s own Brendan Schaub in quarterfinal fight on TUF tonight

By John Livingston | November 18, 2009

Aurora, Colorado native Brendan Schaub is set to take on Jon Madsen tonight in a quarterfinal bout on the UFC and Spike TV’s hit reality show The Ultimate Fighter. It has been a long journey for Schaub, but a win against Madsen would go a long way towards justifying Schaub as a legitimate UFC heavyweight.

Schaub was raised in Aurora where he attended Overland High School. He excelled in football and received a full athletic scholarship to play full back at the University of Colorado. After 4 years with the Buffaloes, Schaub had the opportunity to play in the Arena Football League for the Utah Blaze before landing a spot in the National Football League on the practice squad of the Buffalo Bills. Schaub often practiced martial arts as a way to stay in shape and when he retired from football and returned back home to Colorado he began his pursuit of a mixed martial arts career.

Schaub was able to train with stand out Denver fighters Nate Marquardt and Shane Carwin. Schaub began training at High Altitude Martial Arts in Denver and also was able to train at one of the premiere mixed martial arts gyms in the nation in New Mexico where famed trainer Greg Jackson has been able to work with him. Schaub became a Golden Gloves boxing champion and has since been awarded his purple belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Schaub saw the majority of his first mixed martial arts fights locally in Broomfield, Colorado under the Ring of Fire promotion. In his first four professional fights Schaub has gone 4-0, finishing all of them in the first round by TKO.

Schaub got the chance to compete on this season of The Ultimate Fighter in the heavyweight division and has been coached by fellow Greg Jackson disciple and former UFC light-heavyweight champion Rashad Evans. In his first fight on the show, Schaub submitted Team Rampage Jackson fighter Demico Rogers with a slick anaconda choke. The fight was very back and forth until Schaub was able to gain his composure on the ground and force Rogers to tap out.

Tonight’s fight against Madsen should be a thriller as Madsen is a stand out wrestler who has trained with legendary UFC welterweight and wrestling master Matt Hughes. Madsen won his first TUF fight by beating down Team rampage’s Abe Wagner as he opened up a brutal cut on Wagner’s head that required 20 stitches.

Schaub will be looking to keep the fight on its feet to utilize his superior boxing skills. However, if Madsen is able to secure a take down, Schaub should be comfortable working from his back with his jiu-jitsu skills. It should be an exciting night of action on Spike as Schaub looks to advance to the semi-finals and take another step closer to the ultimate prize, a six figure contract as a UFC fighter.

As always you can catch Schaub’s blog after tonight’s episode to get his thoughts on the happenings of the show.
