Not only will Denver Nuggets teammates Chauncey Billups and Carmelo Anthony be playing together in different uniforms this Sunday for the 2010 NBA All-Star Game, they may now be teaming up for this summer’s FIBA World Basketball Championships and may even be playing together in the 2012 Olympics as both were named to the USA National Team’s 27 man roster today.
Anthony was an obvious selection for the team and he will be one of nine players returning from the 2008 Olympic gold medal team.
With the USA team thin at point-guard with some uncertainty about Chris Paul’s injury, Billups was added to the roster as a key piece to a sometimes difficult to assemble puzzle. Depending on Paul’s condition come this summer, Billups could make the final 12-man roster that the team will take into the FIBA tournamnet.
Training camp for the summer World Championship begins in July and Billups will be available for the Aug. 28-Sept. 12 tournament in Turkey.
When Billups enters camp he will be the oldest man on the roster at 33. He will also remain in the pool of players for selection of the 2012 Olympic team, that Anthony will inevitably be a part of.
With Billups leadership skills and ability to act as another coach on the floor, he could bring invaluable skills to the USA squad that is looking to maintain global dominance and being named to the 12-man roster would surely be an honor the Denver, Colo. native would cherish in his story-book career.
