The sports bill in question, H 1327, passed in the Senate by a majority vote of 27-8 on May 3, 2019. It was then rubberstamped and signed by Gov. Jared Polis. The next step before it could become fully legal was a voter referendum. Proposition DD squeaked through on Nov 5, 2019.

As a result, online and retail sports betting got the green light for Colorado.

In contrast to most US states that have legalized sports betting, Colorado began with mobile sports betting rather than retail. This allowed bettors to register for accounts from the comfort of their own homes, or anywhere across the state. Customers can now place bets at approved retail locations when they have been given the all-clear to open up again. All land-based casinos in the state were temporarily closed due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic but have started opening up again, albeit at a reduced capacity.

Residents, as well as visitors to Colorado, can now place wagers in-person inside casinos located in three towns, Black Hawk, Central City, and Cripple Creek. Betting online is also available throughout the state in brick-and-mortar locations that have obtained the correct internet sports betting license. These casino operators have entered into agreements with online partners, who have launched online sportsbooks and betting apps. If you are wanting to play in a casino, or place a wager in one of the casino’s sportsbooks, we have listed the best casinos in Black Hawk for you to visit.

There are now several betting options for people in Colorado; online, mobile, and retail. Operators will also be pleased with the generous 10% tax on revenue, which has been earmarked for water conservation projects.

Colorado has joined many states in legalizing fantasy sports play. It was the fifth state to do this, after approving legislation in 2016. These include DraftKings, Yahoo, FanDuel, and Fantasy Draft.
