Chris Kuper gets six-year-deal with Denver Broncos

By John Livingston | June 6, 2010

In a move to solidify the team’s offensive line for years to come, the Denver Broncos reached a deal with 27-year-old, 300 pound guard Chris Kuper to keep him in orange and blue for awhile.

The deal is worth $28.021– $13 million of which is guaranteed–over the next six years. Kuper, a Mike Shanahan hold-over, showed he was deserving of a new deal last year as he made the necessary adjustments in coach Josh McDaniels’ system.Chris Kuper

“The fact that the Broncos are putting this much trust in me is an incredible feeling,” Kuper told the Denver Post. “It is a dream come true. I’d like to thank Mr. Bowlen, Coach McDaniels and Brian Xanders for getting this deal done.”

As McDaniels continues the transformation from the Shanahan zone-blocking scheme to the power-blocking system led by giant men on the front line, it seemed pivotal that the Broncos work out a deal with Kuper to solidify the line.

Now the Broncos have an o-line that has the potential to be one of the league’s best for at least the next five years, provided they stay healthy. With All-Pro left tackle Ryan Clady holding down left tackle, Ryan Harris returning to health and to his right tackle post next to Kuper, that is three guys that all have Pro-Bowl potential–Clady of course already being recognized as one of the best tackles in the league.

Add to that 2010 draft picks Zane Beadles and J.D. Walton and you get depth and talented guys with a lot of size across the line.

Exactly the kind of guys you want blocking for Knowshon Moreno and whatever quarterback the Broncos choose to line up under center.
