Denver Broncos reach deal with third-rounder J.D. Walton
By John Livingston | June 17, 2010
The Denver Broncos are working their way through signing their 2010 National Football League Draft selections.
On Thursday, the Broncos reached a deal with third-round pick J.D. Walton, a 6-foot, 3-inch, 305 pound center from Baylor. The deal is worth $2.58 million with a $798,500 signing bonus and is good for four-years.
Walton is expected to start at center in place of the departed Casey Wiegmann and is the size lineman Josh McDaniels wants in his blocking scheme.
He has been running with the first-team offense in OTA’s and he and second-round pick Zane Beadles could both see themselves starting in their rookie season if Russ Hochstein is not up to speed as he is recovering from ACL surgery.
So long as Ryan Clady and Ryan Harris are anchoring the tackle positions, the young interior lineman–alongside veteran Chris Kuper–should have a good enough supporting caste to pick them up when they do make rookie blunders.
The Broncos quarterbacks and running backs –particularly Knowshon Moreno–should enjoy a boost in run and pass blocking this season and Moreno should be able to take advantage of powering his way up the middle.
Walton is a guy that Colorado Sports Desk publisher Jeremy Glasoe and I had begun scouting in January and were anxious to see the Broncos acquire in the draft. When they were able to snag him and Eric Decker, not only did Jeremy and I feel like geniuses for predicting them as Broncos’ selections, but we were instantly excited to see what they would bring to the Broncos field, immediately.
