Elvis Dumervil signs tender with Denver Broncos

In a year where the National Football League’s restricted free-agents are finding it hard to come to agreements on long term deals with the respective clubs, the time is coming for decisions to be made.
On Monday, Elvis Dumervil made the decision to sign his restricted tender with the Denver Broncos in a deal worth $3.168 million for the 2010-11 season.
While the Broncos and Dumervil’s long-term negotiations are still ongoing, there were no signs a deal was imminent, according to the Gazette’s Broncos beat-writer Frank Schwab, so now Dumervil can at least rest assured he has a contract in place the next time he hits the practice fields at Dove Valley.
Dumervil, 26, led the NFL and sacks last year with 17, a total that set the Broncos single season record. He also had 48 tackles and four forced fumbles last season.
In Mike Nolan’s 3-4 defense Dumervil shined at the OLB position and was named to the Pro-Bowl. Now, with Nolan out and Don “Wink” Martindale in, Dumervil is still expected to have productive years in the same position playing the same role in 2010-11 and he should once again be one of the league’s most feared pass-rushers.
The Broncos need to keep a long-term deal with Dumervil as a top priority the remainder of the off-season before getting into the season when talks always fade away. If talks fade and no deal is made, Dumervil could be a free agent a year from now, and will certainly get the kind of money he is looking for in the open market.
