Colorado Sports Betting Background
On November 5, 2019, Proposition DD was narrowly passed, which allowed legislators to enact sports betting legislation. Bill HB19-1327 was approved to authorize legal sports betting in Colorado subject to some terms and conditions being met. Those conditions included factors such as the tax on sports betting, regulations, and the number of licenses to be issued.
Once everything was agreed, legal CO sports betting began on May 1, 2020. This followed the Colorado Limited Gaming Control Commission giving their approval for 31 licenses ranging from distributor licenses to master and vendor licenses.
The law states that sports betting can only occur in casinos that hold a license in Black Hawk, Central City, and Cripple Creek, however, it allows them to offer mobile and online sports betting. There are still some issues to be ironed out with the industry being new to CO, but anyone over the age of 21 can place sports bets at retail sportsbooks and Colorado betting apps.
Any Colorado sportsbook which is trying to get a license needs to go through the Colorado Limited Gaming Control Commission. They are in charge of issuing licenses and are expected to issue a lot more in the coming months.
